Plant Care Tips
Gaillardia or Blanketflowers are native to North America. The plant self-seeds; the common name apparently refers to the way the flower tends to blanket areas where it has naturalized. They are a cheery and colourful addition to gardens. Versatile and hardy perennials, Blanketflowers are very easy to care for. While they grow best in full sun and well-drained soil, they can tolerate less than perfect conditions without much trouble. Before planting, add some compost to the soil and a thin layer over the soil once the plants are in the ground. This will help to conserve water in the summer. While the species is not prone to major diseases or pest problems, you should know that it's essential not to overwater Blanketflowers because of the danger of root-rot; overhead watering may lead to mildew. To avoid self-seeding, all you have to do is deadhead the plants during the blooming period; this will also encourage reblooming. You can fertilize the plants a couple of times during the season using an all-purpose fertilizer.
